What’s Majjie’s Kitchen Corner all about then … do I hear you asking? (I’m going to tell you anyway).

The clue is, of course, in the name … it’s all about kitchens. It’s not about cooking and recipes, because there are plenty of other blogs about those topics in Yell.com’s Kitchens and Cooking Site (although, if you have any great recipes, I’ll always be pleased to hear about them). No … Majjie’s Kitchen Corner is all about kitchen design … about kitchen furniture and units … buying a new kitchen … and all the kitchen equipment and kitchen gadgets that you might want in your kitchen.

In my opinion Kitchen Design is rather an underrated subject. Try looking for it on Yell.com and you’ll find your options are “kitchen design and installation” or “kitchen designers and installers” or “kitchen designers and fitters”. Go back a step to “kitchen” and you’ll get further options such as “kitchen planning and installations” and “kitchen suppliers”.

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that kitchen suppliers, installers and fitters can’t design a good kitchen … it’s just that kitchen design doesn’t have a category to itself. It’s always linked to the supply or installation of the kitchen.

My lament isn’t meant as a criticism of Yell.com either (… especially since they’ve invited me to write this blog!).  Up until recently, nobody except a supplier or installer would have wanted to be included in any directory under “kitchen design” and, even now, the category would be very sparsely populated, if it excluded suppliers and installers. I’d just like to make a prediction (it seems like the right time of year, after all) … that “kitchen design” will become a much more independent category in the future.  It may be when I’m in my dotage but … at some point in the future … I’m going to come back here and say “I told you so”.

In the meantime, Majjie’s Kitchen Corner is devoted just to kitchen design … any sort of kitchen design … from the least expensive flat pack kitchens, to the most expensive hand-made bespoke furniture. From a good looking egg timer … to an all singing, all dancing fridge-freezer that would cost you more than some kitchens. I’m interested in good design for the kitchen, in any shape or form.

I’m also interested in what you think about kitchen design. Is there a difference between kitchen planning and kitchen design? What design improvements would you like to see? Is the term “bespoke” used too widely? Are there any topics you’d like me to cover? You’ll hear plenty of my opinions in the future … but please do feel free to participate and make comments!
